How AI is revolutionising the student journey: A glimpse into the future of Learning Design

What is very apparent as I look towards the future and my role as a Learning Designer is that we are starting a new era in education. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly begun to reshape how we approach online learning, and this influence is not only being felt by designers but, more significantly, by our students.  

AI offers countless opportunities to enhance personalised learning, streamline processes, and create immersive experiences. The key to maximising AI’s potential lies in understanding how it can support learners and educators. So, let’s look at how AI is evolving the student journey and the role of learning designers in shaping the future of education: 

Designing for the Future Online Learner 

The future of education requires designing learning experiences that cater to diverse students with evolving needs. AI offers solutions to address these individual requirements, making education more personalised and adaptive. 

  1. Personalised Learning: AI can tailor educational content to individual learning styles and paces. By analysing data, AI creates unique learning paths that keep students engaged and on track, whether they need more challenging material or additional support. 
  2. Adaptive Learning Technologies: AI-driven platforms adjust task difficulty based on real-time performance, provide immediate feedback, and ensure students are continually challenged and supported, mimicking one-on-one tutoring.
  3. Interactive and Immersive Experiences: AI enables more interactive learning environments through technologies like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). These tools allow students to learn through experience, offering a more engaging and practical approach. 
  4. Efficiency in Design: AI automates routine tasks and can even be used to provide feedback, freeing educators to focus on creative aspects of their delivery. Custom AI tools streamline academic processes, making them more efficient and reducing time-consuming tasks. 

Understanding the AI-Enabled Student 

To leverage AI in education, it is essential to understand how student profiles are changing in an AI-driven world. Today’s students are more diverse and increasingly tech-savvy, with varying levels of familiarity with technology. These students also require AI skills throughout their studies to ensure they are work-ready to meet the demands of an increasingly AI-driven workforce. 

  1. Diverse Backgrounds and Needs: AI can help educators provide flexible solutions that cater to students with different backgrounds and learning needs, ensuring inclusive support for every learner. 
  2. Digital Natives vs. Digital Immigrants: While many students are digital natives, others still require support navigating new technologies. AI can provide intuitive tools that ease the learning process for all students.
  3. Lifelong Learning: AI supports lifelong learning by offering flexible resources that are accessible outside of traditional education settings, which is essential in today’s rapidly changing job market. 

Enhancing the Student Experience with AI in Canvas 

Canvas is a leading learning management system (LMS) used by many of our university partners at OES. It offers seamless integration of AI-powered tools that can enhance the student experience by supporting personalised and efficient learning environments. 

  1. AI-Powered Analytics: Canvas’s analytics track student engagement and performance, allowing educators to adapt their teaching strategies in real time. 
  2. Chatbots and Virtual Assistants: Embedded AI-driven chatbots and tools provide instant support to students, answering questions and guiding them to relevant resources, improving response times in online learning. 

The Role of the Future Learning Designer 

As AI transforms education, Learning Designers must evolve to meet new demands and opportunities. 

  1. Multidisciplinary Skills: Future Learning Designers need skills in education, technology, data analysis, and psychology to design effective AI-driven environments. 
  2. Soft Skills: Creativity, empathy, and collaboration are essential in designing inclusive, engaging learning experiences and sit outside of the technological and ever-evolving space of AI.
  3. Collaboration with AI: Learning Designers will work alongside AI, using it to enhance their creativity and efficiency rather than seeing it as a replacement. 

As you can see from these few examples, AI is transforming education by creating personalised, adaptive, and immersive learning experiences. For educators and Learning Designers like me, the challenge is to embrace AI’s potential and use it to meet the diverse needs of online learners. Doing so can shape a future where education is more efficient, inclusive, and impactful than ever before, and I, for one, am excited to get started.
