As Program Coordinator, Kim oversees the development and delivery of a suite of online business courses for an OES university partner. The portfolio includes courses in Accounting, Finance, Financial Planning and Logistics & Supply Chain.
“The key focus of my role is delivering courses that lead to successful outcomes for students,” Kim explains. “I work with OES Learning Designers, on-campus academics and our teaching teams to continually improve how we build our units and then deliver them. As a team, we are always looking at ways to improve the student experience.”
The journey from industry to education
Kim brings a decade of online education experience to her role, backed by a further two decades of industry expertise. A CPA with a postgraduate diploma in financial management, she worked in the industry for 20 years before moving into business education.
Kim started as a Learning Advisor and Unit Coordinator with an OES university partner in 2012, sharing her industry expertise with students. From there, she became a Lead Unit Coordinator before moving to her current role as Program Coordinator in 2021.
Kim says her professional background combines perfectly with her ‘soft skills’ in this role. As well as overseeing a team of Lead Unit Coordinators, Kim also works closely with university stakeholders.
“My role requires excellent people management and team building skills, to ensure every unit in every course delivers a high quality student experience,” she says. Kim and her team make sure each course meets external accreditation requirements, including the AACSB accreditation quality management system for business education.
Building employability into course content
Workplaces are changing quickly and so are the expectations of employers. That’s why OES is developing new ways for students to build their employability skills. In Kim’s business portfolio, this includes interacting with live clients to understand and solve industry problems during the capstone unit.
“Work-integrated learning gives our students an edge when they are applying for jobs.”
“This is a really exciting project. Students receive invaluable career advice and industry insights from experts. The modules focus on resume building, networking and job interview skills, and offer advice about graduate programs.”
Creating connections in a remote team
As experts in online course delivery, Kim and her team understand the value of staying connected to create a sense of community. Even before COVID-19, they collaborated virtually.
As well as regular online meetings as needed, a virtual catch-up brings the entire portfolio team together every week. “Despite the distance, we can always count on the support and generosity of our team members. We share ideas and talk about different teaching approaches. To make the most of our time together, we strive to be solutions focused, which is brilliant.”
Kim loves the vibrant culture and diversity within the wider OES team.
